I am recovered enough that I want to and will go to work tomorrow. Staying home being sick is interesting enough, I guess, when you’re sick and you’re not good for rubbing more than two synapses together.

Since Friday I’ve only really nursed Hanne to the extent she let me, saw to my own illness, geeked (mostly passively), read (good but easy and familiar books), played video games, walked or helped walk the dog once a day, and slept.

Today I managed to go to Whole Foods, the nearby wine store (to order a special Cassis liqueur [on this page] I use for a particularly tasty and alcoholic sorbet I make – Kir Sorbet, from the Frozen Desserts book I’ve talked about before), given a gift of a high falutin’ dishrack (asked for – I generally try to give less practical gifts but it’s fraught asking Hanne what she wants, so I’m gracious enough to get her a selection of gifts from what she did ask for, this dishrack among them) and set it up including cleaning up the old one for giving to good will and cleaning under the old in prep for the new, put away dishes in the dishwasher and played more thinky, active video games (like the aforementioned World of Goo). And I’m still kickin’. Yesterday after doing one chore, I just about fell on my ass from exhaustion.

Hanne is on the mend too, which is awesome.

For my part, I got two very nice gifts today as well. A nice, roomy sweatshirt that’s built for warmth and comfort (Yay! Thanks hon! No I ain’t noticing prices.) and a nice mandarin-collar button-down Irish work shirt, which we’ll see whether it passes work dress code muster, but is quite nice nonetheless, I think, even if I must only wear it on Jeans Fridays or only at home. It’s really comfortable, all cotton, thick and just the way I like shirts to be. Yay!

Most of the rest of the symptoms are now gone, two days after the main draught of sickness is gone. But I am left with a huge, yawning fatigue.

I can do simple things, like get myself a meal reheated or a sandwich made, or put the case back on a couch cushion after washing it. I can write a post, or play part of a video game level. The effort here isn’t just physical effort, but possibly emotional (though I haven’t had to suppress any strong urges), but definitely includes thinking effort.

But then I need to sit and rest. Sometimes for an hour or more.

It’s galling.
