Outsider music – kazoos and balloon basses

This is sort of inspired by REAL LIFE WORK EXPERIENCE just this morning as well as a MetaFilter post about a balloon bass (though the post seems to emphasize the Cajón-like box more).

Turns out that my workplace is going to take inspiration from a suggestion I made off-the-cuff to an organizer of our even which will involve kazoos. I find this highly amusing because H has done some pretty notable activism with kazoos and I have a love-hate relationship with kazoos but mostly love, though I often forget which end to blow into (and keep thinking maybe this time I’ll remember) and then there’ll be 5 years again before I see another kazoo.

It is semi-urgent that we lay hands on kazoos in fairly mass quantities and it turns out that music stores are the best place to go (we plan to call a local music store this morning to ask about their stock) but I also feel I must note that Kazoobie Kazoos sells not only a wide range of non-amplified kazoos but also an electric kazoo (and some mini-amps too). I am seriously tempted, let me tell you. Can you imagine the Ode to Joy on kazoo chorus with a soloist on amplified kazoo? Oh the arrangements!

I also wanted to highlight this bass balloon a little bit. Very interesting stuff and apparently quite carefully constructed. Here also is a solo performance (sans-Cajón) which is pretty good, and shows off the placement of a mandolin amp on the bass. Also, some loop experiments.

So there you have it. A spazz morning for me, definitely.

P.S. As a bonus it turns out this balloon bass guy is also responsible for the postcard picture I have of Mongolians wearing balloon hats.
