I wanted to point you to a very profitable discussion going on on Metafilter right now.
Over on MetaFilter, last month, when the Schrödinger’s Rapist blog post went up, there was a long and profitable discussion (the post and 845 comments). Certainly it got a bit fighty in the beginning as a lot of self-styled “Nice Guys” (among them, I’m certain, mostly just clueless guys who’re pissed to find out that their well-meaning clumsy social graces were probably taken wrong by intended lasses, as well as perhaps a couple of the more evil nice guys) took offense and had to be talked down by some of the incredibly patient Sexism 101 docents on Metafilter. But the thread was still being discussed last week as its 30 day time limit ran out. It’s well worth reading, especially to catch glimpses of the future, where some Nice Guys actually got it and posted that they got it and intended not only to change their ways but their friends’ ways.
Last week, on MetaTalk, which is a more open discussion format that allows for off-topic digression, jokeefe reposted about the thread from last month and the discussion continued there (the post and 454 comments right now). When I say discussion, I mean both consenting and dissenting voices, but I also mean that while things get fighty they also get moderated, and there are/were probably more voices of reason than there are of unreason, and a lot of good was done and is still being done over there. Folks are also occasionally changing their minds (which I think is unheard of in most Internet communities) and not only that, they are posting comments saying so. Also there are some brave folks who are posting stories. Stories of assaults and aftermaths, near misses and not, and also posting about not only how they felt about it immediately as well as how they felt about it later and how they feel about it now, often because of reading these threads.
It’s been quite amazing and very inspiring. If you have time and energy, don’t miss it, but I realize I’m talking about threads with total comments around 1,300 and counting and I also realize I’m talking about potentially very triggering territory.
