Things for a couple to do for a week in S.F./Sonoma County?

October 14th, 2008 by Malcolm

Somehow this got posted as a Page, not a Post

Asked on behalf of my friend, R:

He and his wife are visiting SF and Sonoma County the week after the elections. Assuming we’re not under martial law after that, what can they do to enjoy themselves? Details about R. and wife follow.

R and his wife are both avid hikers and birders. They also like wine. They are ovo-lacto vegetarians.

They already plan to hitĀ Greens Restaurant, but most of the stuff I know about, eating-wise is not veggie.

In S.F. they’ll be staying for two nights in Union Square. Then in the county in some sort of resort/cabin that fronts the Russian River. They’ll be renting a car for the trip.

Obviously there’s a lot of overlap with things that happen every day in S.F. I’m thinking of suggesting they at least go to theĀ Ferry Building Market, but what else might they do for fun/eats/hiking about/looking at birds/having other kinds of fun? Ideas?

Guess the veggie requirement rules out places like Incanto, boccalone, and dim sum. Which does make it difficult, but
Millenium is supposed to be a very good veggie place.

I agree the ferry terminal is a good place to go, saturday farmers market is great, but it can be crazy there.

I like walking around Sutro Baths and the number 38/Geary bus goes from Union Square/downtown to the cliffs.

I walking china town and north beach is a lot of fun. If you can handle the elders on the busy streets.

There are some nice walks up near Pt Reyes, and a nice bakery along with Cow Girl Creamery. We often pick up a lunch of bread and cheese and head out to the coast and one of the preserves. The Pt Reyes Light house is a really nice walk. Long drive through cow pastures to get to it, something like 26 miles from the highway, but it is a beautiful view.

If they have the time to drive up the coast before the russian river that could be fun. I love the wild coast from marin on up.

Armstrong Redwood State Park would be fun if they have not seen Coast Redwoods before.

The wineries I tend to go to are further north from Sonoma, in Napa and Yountville and Healdsburg. But some to try:

    Prager Port Works

Cakebread Cellars they do tours, and often require a reservation.

St. Supery is a nice winery.

    V. Sattui has so so wines, in my opinion. I know lots of folks who like to taste there, they also have a nice little market and picnic grounds.

I have a friend who loves visiting the Sonoma Port works

hmmm I am sure I could come up with more… let me know if you want me to ponder this a bit more. I should get back to work. :)

    karine,

Yes please, if you’ve got time, I’ll forward your further comments (and these too!) to R and, via him, his wife. If you don’t have time, that’s okay too. :)
